Peru’s Congress approves 10-year GMO ban
November 13, 2012

Peru’s Congress announced Friday it overwhelmingly approved a 10-year moratorium on imports of genetically modified organisms in order to safeguard the country’s biodiversity.

The measure bars GMOs — including seeds, livestock, and fish — from being imported for cultivation or to be raised locally.

Exceptions include the use of GMO products for research purposes in a closed environment, but those will be closely monitored, the legislature’s official news service said.

The bill, approved late Thursday, now goes to President Ollanta Humala to be signed into law. Humala, who has been in power since late July, has repeatedly said he opposes GM programs.

According to the Agriculture Ministry, Peru is one of the world’s leading exporters of organic food, including coffee and cocoa, with $3 billion a year in revenues and 40,000 certified producers.

Congress approved a similar 10-year moratorium in June, but outgoing president Alan Garcia, who was seen as being favorable to GM, did not ratify the ban.

There was friction over GM in the previous government’s ministries of agriculture and environment.

The head of Peru’s Consumer Agency, Jaime Delgado, said the moratorium is long enough to learn from scientific studies that will emerge on the effects of GMO products.

The country’s leading group representing farmers and ranchers, the National Agrarian Convention, said that by this measure Peru “defends its biodiversity, its agriculture, its gastronomy and its health.”

Source

Meanwhile in the US, GMO labeling alone has not even been enacted at the national, state or local levels.

thepeoplesrecord:

November 13, 2012

All those who “incite public protests” or insult state rulers online can now face jail time in the Arab Emirates, alongside increased state monitoring and censorship. President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan signed the new decree mere hours after he was granted a seat on the UN Human Rights Council for the next three years.

In his first public talk since seeking asylum, Julian Assange is set to speak in a Q&A session via video chat with Cambridge University from the Ecuadorian embassy. The specific topic of his Q&A session has yet to be revealed.

In Australia, two men and a woman have climbed on top of a roof and have stayed put for two days now to protest the woman and her husband’s impending deportation back to Fiji.

French investigators expect to have more information in a few weeks-a month.

About 3,000 protesters flooded Naples yesterday to protest high youth unemployment rates that have plagued Italy in recent months. As demonstrators hurled bottles & rocks at riot police, forces fired back with tear gas & injured 23.

Unemployment for 15-24-year olds climbed to 35.1 percent in September, up 4.7 percent from last year.

The Anarchivist recognizes art in everyday life, and must...

The Anarchivist recognizes art in everyday life, and must artfully archive the world in a way that inspires and does not alienate us from the history that is found .everywhere

Any traditional Archive is constructed to become a...

Any traditional Archive is constructed to become a reality-defining institution that can arbitrarily decide to delete what it wants to hide. (cf. Orwell’s Ministry of Truth) Thus, another impetus for the Anarchives.

thepeoplesrecord:

US National Archives blocks searches containing ‘WikiLeaks’

November 4, 2012

The public search engine for the US National Archives appears to be blocked for the term “WikiLeaks”. The whistleblower website has already lashed out at the move, saying the Archives has turned into “Orwell’s Ministry of Truth.”

An error message pops up every time a search is performed with the word “WikiLeaks”.

It’s not entirely clear when the US National Archives decided to block these searches.

However, WikiLeaks’ has already called the whole thing a “farce”.

“The US National Archives has literally turned into Orwell’s Ministry of Truth,”a message on the site’s Twitter account reads, adding“The US state is literally eating its own brain by censoring its own collective memories about WikiLeaks.”

The block is likely to be in line with the “Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act,” a form of internet censorship the US adopted back in 2010.

It did not become law, but it prompted various US government agencies such as the White House Office of Management and Budget and the US Air Force to advise their employees not to read or access classified documents being made available by sites like WikiLeaks.

The Library of Congress went further by blocking access to WikiLeaks content from its server in 2010.

The American Library Association suggested this violated the First Amendment rights of internet users to receive information.

“The Library of Congress’s decision is a violation of the First Amendment and a violation of the American Library Association’s Bill of Rights. Moreover, it is a violation of the professional ethics of librarians to always provide free access to all information,” their statement said.

WikiLeaks exploded on to the global scene back in 2006, since then releasing hundreds of thousands of classified diplomatic cables, including top secret documents from the US Department of Defense, and secret cables from the State Department.

Some of that classified information was seen as damaging the US government’s reputation in a number of incidents.

Recently it was revealed that the US government officially considers WikiLeaks’ and its founder Julian Assange to be enemies of the state.

Declassified US Air Force counter-intelligence documents show that military personnel contacting WikiLeaks could face execution for “communicating with the enemy.”

The fact that WikiLeaks was treated as an enemy of state would have serious implications should Assange be extradited to the US, as he could face military detention.

Source

thepeoplesrecord:

Is Occupy Wall Street outperforming the Red Cross in hurricane relief?

November 4, 2012

In Sunset Park, a predominantly Mexican and Chinese neighborhood in South Brooklyn, St. Jacobi’s Church was one of the go-to hubs for people who wanted to donate food, clothing, and warm blankets or volunteer help other New Yorkers who were still suffering in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. On Saturday, Ethan Murphy, one of the people heading the kitchen operation, estimated they would prepare and send out 10,000 meals to people in need. Thousands and thousands of pounds of clothes were being sorted, labeled, and distributed, and valuable supplies like heaters and generators were being loaded up in cars to be taken out to the Rockaways, Staten Island and other places in need. However, this well-oiled operation wasn’t organized by the Red Cross, New York Cares, or some other well-established volunteer group. This massive effort was the handiwork of none other than Occupy Wall Street—the effort is known as Occupy Sandy.

The scene at St. Jacobis on Saturday was friendly, orderly chaos. Unlike other shelters that had stopped collecting donations or were looking for volunteers with special skills such as medical training, Occupy Sandy was ready to take anyone willing to help. A wide range of people pitched in, including a few small children making peanut butter sandwiches, but most volunteers were in their 20s and 30s. A large basement rec room had become a hive of vegetable chopping and clothes bagging. They held orientations throughout the day for new volunteers. One of the orientation leaders, Ian Horst, who has been involved with a local group called Occupy Sunset Park for the past year, says he was “totally blown away by the response” and the sheer numbers of people who showed up and wanted to help. He estimated that he’d given an orientation to 200 people in the previous hour.

By midday, a line stretched all the way down the block of people who’d already attended orientation and were waiting for rides to be dispatched to volunteer. Kiley Edgley and Eric Schneider had been waiting about 20 minutes and were toward the front of the line. Like several people I spoke to, the fact that this effort was being organized by the occupy movement wasn’t a motivating factor—they found out about the opportunity to volunteer online and just wanted to help.

So how did an offshoot of Occupy Wall Street, best known as a leaderless movement that brought international attention to issues of economic injustice through the occupation of Zucotti Park in the financial district last year, become a leader in local hurricane relief efforts? Ethan Murphy, who was helping organize the food at St. Jacobis and had been cooking for the occupy movement over the past year, explained there wasn’t any kind of official decision or declaration that occupiers would now try to help with the hurricane aftermath. “This is what we do already, “ he explained: Build community, help neighbors, and create a world without the help of finance. Horst said, “We know capitalism is broken, so we have already been focused on organizing to take care of our own [community] needs.” He sees Occupy Sandy as political ideas executed on a practical level.

As frustration grows around the city about the pace and effectiveness of the response from FEMA, and other government agencies and the Red Cross, I imagine both concerned New Yorkers and storm victims alike will remember who was out on the front lines.

Source

Take a look: this is an original copy of the Handbook for Nonviolent Action, 1 of 3000 produced by the War Resister’s League for the World Trade Organization [WTO] events in Seattle, November 1999. Looks like @nerephotography has a pretty badass collection of activist ephemera!

WOW…that’s excellent! I wonder what other cool items are lurking out there in the rest of America…love the Gertrude Stein quote by the way:

Considering how dangerous everything is, nothing is really very frightening.

travelswithmemee:

From Boston to New Orleans! From New York to Chicago! @nerephotography, who is hosting Jez, Ale, & Frankie of the TWM crew this weekend, has put together an impressive #Occupy ephemera collection, from as far back as the 2nd week of #OccupyWallStreet.

What a great #occupy collection! Glad to see the decentralized origins of the ANARCHIVES are already in place! What we need now is an online DISUNION catalog and a general set of ethics to guide our culture. (1st rule: Share yr collection with someone! Maybe try a collection exchange…)

Also, pls send me a photo of yr own #occupy or #OWS collection! We want to collect EV-ER-Y-THING!

Help fund the Travels With Memee crew’s tour of the U.S. so they can help the anarchives come to fruition: http://www.indiegogo.com/travelswithmemee
