The People’s Record Daily News Update - Whose news? Our news!
November 13, 2012
Here are some stories you may not otherwise read about today:
- All those who “incite public protests” or insult state rulers online can now face jail time in the Arab Emirates, alongside increased state monitoring and censorship. President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahayan signed the new decree mere hours after he was granted a seat on the UN Human Rights Council for the next three years.
- In his first public talk since seeking asylum, Julian Assange is set to speak in a Q&A session via video chat with Cambridge University from the Ecuadorian embassy. The specific topic of his Q&A session has yet to be revealed.
- In Australia, two men and a woman have climbed on top of a roof and have stayed put for two days now to protest the woman and her husband’s impending deportation back to Fiji.
- The BBC is being rocked by a “fast-evolving” scandal that suggests a blatant disregard for basic journalistic standards. BBC director George Entwistle (in photograph above) has already resigned over the scandal, and more resignations are expected.
- The work to exhume the body of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has begun. Amid suspicion that he was poisoned by Israel, traces of polonium have been found on the late president’s body. Polonium is a highly toxic substance rarely found outside military and scientific circles, used to kill former Russian spy turned Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko, for instance. French investigators expect to have more information in a few weeks-a month.
